How a workplace looks and functions cater not only to the nature of the work but also to who uses it. In the past couple of years, a new generation has entered the workforce and they are defining what modern means in an office space.
Born between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z, or zoomers as they are now being called, are now part of the world’s working population. In fact, they are expected to make up 27% percent of the workforce by 2025. Zoomers are seen as resourceful and flexible workers but also critical and discerning about what they want from an employer.
As their numbers grow, so does the importance of attracting, accommodating, and retaining them. Designing an office around flexibility, customization, technology, and sustainability are some of the things you should consider in making the perfect modern workplace for zoomers.
Focus On Individualism and Flexibility
Individualism fuels Gen Z like no other. For them, it’s all about authenticity and being one’s true self. It also gives them drive in their careers and is part of their work ethic so taking this into consideration in office design is important. Zoomers can be flexible and they want to be flexible. They want options–the chance to choose how they work and what their space can look like.
Flexibility also means having the choice to stay in the office or work from home. They are highly acquainted with hybrid working so it’s what they naturally gravitate to. Working alone is the default of many Zoomers. They rarely choose face-to-face collaboration so don’t be surprised if they shy away from it. In fact, only 8% of zoomers like open spaces, but they still acknowledge that collaboration and teamwork are essential.
Create Multiple Spaces
Multiple spaces and setups are the way to go. Different layouts accommodate various manners of working styles and make an office agile and adaptable. Design diverse spaces to cater to every form and style. Privacy booths or paneled stations minimize distraction and are perfect for solo work that requires concentration. Enclave spaces are great for smaller focus group discussions while general meetings require conference rooms that can provide for blended face-to-face and online setups.
Incorporate Tech
There’s no denying that a workplace fitted with the latest tech is a must, but more so for an office that caters to Gen Z. Zoomers are digital natives–a generation born in the digital age and practically has tech embedded in all aspects of their lives. Working zoomers are leaders in online collaboration. They are hyper-connected due to social media and the internet in general.
Activate spaces with technology to make your office easy to link up to those working offsite. Online meetings are here to stay so set up accessible screens in big boardrooms and pocket rooms. Additionally, consider incorporating smart furniture and smart energy fittings that support the use of a wide range of current and future innovative technological tools.
Prioritize Mental Health
Mental health is another high priority for Generation Z. Having learned from the past generations, they are actively mindful of avoiding burnout and toxic workplaces. For zoomers, high productivity and efficiency can only be achieved if they are healthy physically and mentally.
A well-planned office boosts mental well-being. Incorporate nature into your design to help alleviate stress and promote a relaxed vibe. Ample sunlight, greenery, and well-ventilated spaces can energize as well as calm the mind.
Overall, designing the ideal office for Gen Z should help them cultivate a sense of community with their peers and foster creative collaboration with workmates from all generations without making them feel forced to do so. A positive workplace should come out naturally and a well-designed office will definitely contribute to that.
